Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the UCSD School of Medicine with comprehensive clinical programs, extensive basic science and clinical research, and diverse educational opportunities for students, residents and fellows. Under supervision, the Lab Assistant will provide support to the UCSD Biochemical Genetics Laboratory. This includes maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, sample preparation, keeping the laboratory area clean and organized, and assisting with administration. The incumbent performs other duties assigned as needed.
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience working in a research lab environment and basic knowledge of biological terms. Willingness to follow step-wise experimental protocols. Skill and ability to keep accurate data.
General computer skills, to input data, store results and compute rawdata. Knowledge of Access, MS Word and Excel.
Knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers, income and expenditures reports.
Willingness to become familiar with proper handling of chemical and biohazardmaterials.
Willingness to maintain confidentiality.
Organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.
Willingness to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety andenvironmental issues. Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment. Willingness to work with other staff members, students, faculty etc.
Ability to use basic laboratory equipment including balances and pH meters.
- Knowledge in biology and chemistry. Ability to work with genetics or biochemical genetics.
Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
Ability to work with human biological samples as well as radioactive, chemical and biological waste.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $43,159 - $50,738 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $20.67 - $24.30
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
